OUT OF THE BOX
Schaulager

It's been 20 years since Schaulager opened its doors. With OUT OF THE BOX, Schaulager presents an extensive group exhibition featuring works by around 25 artists. One major focus of the exhibition is on time-based media artworks, which are presented in dedicated and specially built projection rooms. Each work is unique and has its own distinct history within the collection. Particularly noteworthy is the complex audio and video installation Ravel Ravel (2013) by Albanian artist Anri Sala. For OUT OF THE BOX, Sala chose to present an adapted version of the work which was produced in 2017. The two projection screens are not shown one above the other, but one behind the other on two semi-transparent screens in a sound-reduced space conceived by the artist. The content of the work focuses on Maurice Ravel's composition “Concerto pour la main gauche”, and the commissioning of the piece by Paul Wittgenstein, who lost his right arm as a result of a war injury in the First World War.

Tweaklab was commissioned with the entire media-technical planning and installation as well as with the digital processing of the media of the following works: Anri Sala, Ravel Ravel Interval; Tacita Dean, Paradise; Dieter Roth, Solo Szenen; Jane & Louise Wilson, Gamma. And furthermore for the programming of the power automation for all the various media devices as well as the control of the slide projectors for the work of Fischli/Weiss.
