Inaugural exhibition
Kulturstiftung Basel H. Geiger

The newly opened space of the Kulturstiftung Basel H. Geiger is showing contemporary art from the Caribbean as its inaugural exhibition "One month after being known in that island" and has commissioned the Caribbean Art Initiative to do so. Fascinating works by eleven artists from various regions of the Caribbean are being presented in the former factory building.

Tweaklab was commissioned to plan, encode and install the audiovisual works, such as the following: In her video presentation "Toli Toli" Minia Biabiany poses questions about the identity of the population of Guadaloupe. The Creole children’s song sung by the artist herself can be heard either through radio headphones or loudspeakers. "La Clave / La Llave (The KeY)" by Tony Cruz Pabón from Puerto Rico features different covers of music albums of the tropical regions from the 60s, 70s and 80s in the form of video projections. The audio work "Trete pou lapè lavi diran" by Haitian artist Guy Régis Jr. can be heard through a sound shower. It is the recording of a reading of the Creole translation of the treaty text of the "Peace of Basel" of 1795, in which the French were allotted large parts of Hispaniola.
