Elevation 1049
LUMA Foundation

Elevation 1049 – Between Heaven and Hell is the first in a series of site-specific exhibitions, curated by Neville Wakefield and Olympia Scarry. The scene of event is the village Gstaad, which is situated 1049 m above sea level, as indicated by the title. The mainly performative works take place outdoors and interact with the landscape and its residents. It exchanged the confines of the White Space for the snow-covered alpine landscape.

The projects and works were carefully documented on two cameras, and the discussions between the artists and Neville Wakefield were recorded.

Especially the momentary performance "Alles fährt Ski" by Roman Signer was captured on film. A Gaade, which is a small chalet or wooden hut, slides down the hill on skis. The chalet had been bound to a tree trunk with a thick rope, which Roman Signer then cut with an axe. The recording shows Roman Signer from within the chalet cutting the rope. The film was edited and afterwards installed in the chalet for the exhibition.
