The Antikenmuseum Basel stages the saga of the gladiators in legendary Troy, when Achill sacrificed animals at the grave of his fallen friend and organised a competition with weapons. This was to appease the spirit of the deceased. And so the first gladiatorial combats were held in Rome in honour of a dead man. The connection to the cult of the dead soon diminished and politicians organized games to make themselves popular with the people.
Tweaklab was commissioned with the media technical planning, postproduction, programming and installation of the two media rooms «Gladiator. The End», a multi-channel audio-video installation, and the virtual implementation of the well-known gladiator mosaic of Kaiseraugst.
For the mosaic, which can be seen in its entirety for the first time in the museum, we produced a film with camera movements in a 3D model of the house where the mosaic was found. The animation also includes archive footage of the excavation and footage of Augusta Raurica’s model. The projected image was positioned accurately onto the architecture above the mosaic.
«Gladiator. The End» forms the last point of this spectacular exhibition and brings various types of gladiators out of the darkness and tells their life and death stories. The post-production of this 4-channel film, as well as the programming of the entire show, was implemented and installed by us.
